California Scholarship Federation (CSF)

The California Scholarship Federation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to recognize and encourage academic achievement and community service among middle and high school students in California. There are approximately 1500 chapters in middle school and high schools throughout the state, and each chapter is comprised of students members who meet eligibility requirements. Each chapter is led by a staff adviser.

Eligible students become members by submitting applications based on their report card grades. Membership is for one semester, and membership drives are held each semester within established periods dictated by the State bylaws.

Conferences are held annually, and student awards recognizing scholastic achievement and community service are presented.

Students without completed applications and payments will not be eligible for semester membership.

PER CSF STATE REGULATIONS, NO LATE APPLICATIONS OR PAYMENTS CAN BE ACCEPTED.

The student must apply for membership during the application period, from February 6th - March 13th. Membership is based on semester grades from the prior semester. Students who are members for at least 4 semesters using grades earned in 10th, 11th and 12th grades will be awarded Life Membership (Seal-bearer) status.

To qualify for CSF, the guidelines below must be followed:

  1. Based on the previous semester grades, applicants must earn a minimum of 10 points from the CSF approved lists. See: LL:  25-26 CSF Course List  (also attached to this packet).

    1. The first 4 points must be from List I.

    2. The first 7 points (including the four points described above) must be from List I or II.

  2. Applicants may use no more than 5 courses to qualify for CSF membership.

  3. No CSF points are given for physical education, subjects repeated to improve a grade, student assistant, or office assistant positions.

  4. CSF points are granted as follows:

CSF FAQ

What is CSF? California Scholarship Federation is a statewide organization to honor outstanding high school students for their academic achievements.

Do I get a scholarship for being in CSF? Being in CSF does not guarantee that you will get a monetary scholarship, but membership is something that you can put on your list of awards and activities and those who have met the requirements for Life Membership (Seal-bearer) status will be recognized at Senior Awards night.

Why do we pay membership dues? The CSF state organization charges LLHS membership dues in order to belong to their academic honor society. The dues also cover the cost of awards given to seniors who are Seal-Bearers.

What happens if I miss the membership deadline? The following excerpts were taken from the CSF website, www.csf-cjsf.org: Membership is neither automatic nor compulsory. The By-Laws (Article IV, Section 2) and every chapter’s mandatory Standing Rules (Article III, Section 3) require that the eligible student actually apply for membership, and retroactive membership (after the deadline) is prohibited. Students are responsible for reading school announcements and responding within the application period.

What is a lifetime member and what kind of awards may I get? The requirements for Life Member (also called “Seal-bearer”) are stated above. The REQUIRED awards for Life Members are the pin and the embossing of the chapter seal on the diploma.
